And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. - Deuteronomy 6:6-7

The goal of the Family Life Ministry at Southwest is not merely to build another program but to build life through families! We are convinced that every person who walks through our doors has the same basic desire; to have a better more fulfilling life for themselves and especially for their families. As much as we all want that we also realize that families with children in their homes are under a tremendous amount of stress. Our desire is to help ease those burden by equipping, training, and encouraging young families who are fighting on the front lines of this culture's battleground!

The Family Life Ministry at Southwest is seeking to gear everything we do, every class we teach and every program we initiate, toward enriching and emboldening our members to live, walk, and talk their faith at home because we truly believe what Deuteronomy 6 says - we are not victorious until we win our families!

The current curriculum is the popular Kidmo series. Also, we have Bible studies for all ages at 9:30 on Sunday mornings, and our Student Ministry meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 in the Filling Station upstairs in the multi-purpose building. In addition, Southwest has home groups that meet at various times during the week throughout the Fort Worth area.

______________________________ - Home Groups Ministry

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." - Acts 2:42,46-47

The Home Groups Ministry exists to help foster and facilitate the type of community within our church like that described about the first century church in the book of Acts. We encourage authentic community building at Southwest by plugging people into small groups where we can share our lives with each other.

"The key to church health is that a church must grow larger and smaller at the same time" - Rick Warren

If you're looking for a place where you can get to know other people and have others care about you, you will find that in our home groups. Besides just getting together once a week for Bible study and fellowship, members of our home groups enjoy rich relationships with others that goes well beyond just casual Sunday morning acquaintances.

"The development of meaningful relationships where every member carries a significant sense of belonging is central to what it means to be the church." - Randy Frazee

Studies have shown that there is something within each of us that draws us to other believers and creates a need to belong.

"We [as Americans] are physically detached from each other. We change places of residence frequently. One survey revealed that seven in ten do not know their neighbors. As many as one-third of Americans admit to frequent periods of loneliness." - George Gallup, Jr.

To get involved in a home group, you can contact one of the leaders directly or Jimmie Hackworth at homegroups@swcchurch.org. You can find a list of the groups in each Sunday's bulletin or on our website and you can use our map in the foyer to find a group near you. After participating in a home group for a while, you may even discover that you'd like to open up your own home for a new group. If so, let us know. We're always looking for new host homes!

(submitted 11/05/08)

Dear Praying Ones,

We have been blessed to receive e-mails from several of you telling us that you are praying and fasting with us for God to be glorified in the life of Jonah & his parents. I know those e-mails represent the many, many others who are praying as well. Yuwolim arrived at Ukarumpa today (as well as Alfias, another co-translator). They will be here for three weeks working with Steve on translating Mark. They had left the village Tuesday and hiked to another airstrip to assure that the weather would not be a problem for the plane. I told him that the churches in America were praying for Jonah right now in a special way. Pray for good health for their families in their absence as well as health while here (I came down with a cold & am praying Steve does not get it).

We have one more prayer request that we would like you to be praying for on Thursday (late Wednesday afternoon/evening Central Time). As we shared before, a flu epidemic was rampant in the village while we were out there recently. Several in the dialect next to us died and a few in our area as well. We heard since we returned to Ukarumpa that a baby died. The father, Samwel, has helped us last term with translating some literacy books. He married a woman who is a non-believer from another dialect. Samwel and his wife have accused some of the people at Yimnalem of killing his baby by sorcery. In PNG, traditionally, there is no "natural death", but it is caused either by the sin of a person or sorcery. Many Christians have refuted that practice and look to God in times of death. Our hearts are grieved to hear this news and are praying for God to convict Samwel of his sin in doing this and drop the court case. And if he does carry out the court case, we are asking for the Christians in Yimnalem to reflect Christ's character (who also was falsely accused). May God redeem this situation for His glory.

We have been praying for the United States during the election. Yesterday, I was working on a 2009 Tay calendar, choosing translated verses for each month. Since 1 & 2 Timothy have been recently translated into Tay, I chose some of the Scriptures for the calendar from those books. The Tay have requested more teaching on the topic of prayer, so I included I Timothy 2:1-4 that says, "I urge, then, first of all that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." It struck me that this applied to me as well, especially in light of the elections the next day. I was convicted that no matter WHO won the election in America, God instructs us to PRAY for that person as our authority.

Praise the King of Kings who reigns over all!

Rhonda for the Haywards

A Note From CCA - Southwest News

My name is Melba DelaCruz and I have been given the honor of being the Director of Christian Community Assistance. For those of you who do not know about Christian Community Assistance, it is an organization that was started in 1989, by people who saw a need for a central place to send people who came to their church's door asking for assistance. So, in other words we are an extension of you.

Christian Community Assistance serves needy people in several different zip codes and also any referrals from our 26 sponsoring churches no matter where they live. We provide enough groceries based on the family size to feed them for at least seven days if not more. We also serve about 75 elderly persons on a monthly basis. These are person who can not get or sustain gainful employment. We also have a back to school shoe program ($15.00) which assures that the children of our most needy clients have new shoes when they go back to school. The other program that we have is our Holiday Bags which used to be called our Thanksgiving Basket. This is all the fixing for a holiday meal plus a $10.00 gift certificate for a turkey or ham. We changed its name because, our churches always provide more than we need for Thanksgiving and we have distributed them through Christmas and have watched our clients faces light up with excitement. We also started a Toy store for our Christmas drive. We want to make sure that each child that comes to CCA receives at least one new toy.

I want to let you know that I counsel with each and every client that walks through our doors. I have often prayed with them and have given them a list of our sponsoring churches. I try to locate jobs for them or give them some avenues for job sources that they may not have already. I am proud to announce that we have seen quite a few success stories. We are currently working towards the Holiday Bags drive and will be working toward setting up the Toy Store. If you ever wanted to assist a family during the holidays, this is a great way to do just that. We would greatly appreciate even the smallest help that you can give. God Bless you for your faithfulness to this your ministry.

In His Service,

Melba DelaCruz

(submitted 10/27/08)

The following is a reprint of an e-mail sent by our missionary Rhonda Hayward to SWCC on Oct. 23rd. Subject: "Return from Yimnalem."

Dear Praying Ones,

We arrived safely from the village yesterday. Thank you for your prayers during the three week time we were in the village. We had very beautiful weather in travelling to and from the village (not always a 'given' in our mountainous area). I want to share a few of the highlights with you.

It was a wonderful reunion after a nearly three year absence. We were so blessed to hear, time and again, people share how they had prayed for Steve when they had heard he was 'so sick' (his surgery to remove the tumor from his pancreas). They told us they had been confident that God would heal him because 'his work with the Tay was not done yet'. It was wonderful to hear stories of how God had moved to encourage the Tay in various ways while we were gone and how He had met them in some very personal ways that encouraged their faith. It was also special having many informal opportunites to read or quote Tay Scripture and have discussion with people about them.

We arrived just as a virile flu epidemic was spreading through the area (it is here at Ukarumpa too and other parts of the nation). Though it was hard to see so many sick and hear of some who were dangerously ill (some actually died in surrounding villages), we were thankful to be there and be able to give out LOTS of Tylenol (nearly 1000 tabs)and some antibiotics when the flu went into secondary infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. We were also very blessed to

be able to pray with people and hear how they were praying for each other. We witnessed some miraculous healings (very sick one day and totally well the next). Please continue to pray for people's healing and protection as this epidemic runs its course.

Steve and some Tay men spent several days checking the translation of 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus and Jude that had been translated in September. They had some very intereting and encouraging discussions. Rhonda took a felt need survey one day with many village leaders to determine areas they would like to have Bible studies in to show how God & His Word address these needs. We are excited now to prepare studies on topics they highlighted like 'how do we pray?', 'What kind of God do we have?', 'How can we not fear evil spirits and witchcraft?', etc. We have asked the leaders to pray and appoint people to work with us in preparing and presenting these studies. Pray for God to guide them in doing that and for us as we prepare these studies.

We are now working on getting two translators up here in November to translate with Steve (working on Mark and John). Pray for the logistics of getting them up here. In December, we will have three different men coming up to do the final consultant check on the book of Revelation.

While in the village, we got a radio message that our house here at Ukarumpa had been broken into. Thankfully, not a whole lot of real value was stolen. We'd like to share more details of God's mercy amidst that incident and what He has been teaching us through it, but to keep this letter from being too long, will send an 'appendage' in a few days. We also want to share a very special prayer request and testimony of faith about our co-translator Yuwolim and his son Jonah in another letter in a few days.

But for now, thank you so much for your prayers. God faithfully and graciously answered. We count on those prayers continuing!

With Love,

Rhonda for the Haywards

A Love Affair With Milligan is a book of memoirs written by Marshall Leggett, who served as the President of Milligan College in Tennessee from 1982 to 1997. He and his wife Jean are active members of Southwest Christian Church. The book was recently published and is now being distributed nationally.

Marshall will have copies of his book available in the foyer after this Sunday's worship, and he will be happy to personally sign a copy of his book for you.

Let's all take time to congratulate Marshall on this wonderful achievement.

(submitted 10/13/08)

Greetings,

Well, our bags are unpacked and the pictures are on the walls, most of them at least, and we are settling into the basic routine of life. These past couple of weeks have seemed more like home here at Southwest and we are thrilled to be here!

The Family Life Ministry is taking shape as well. You might have noticed some new things, so here they are. We have started a new Sunday morning class meeting in the back area of the multi-purpose room. This class is a little different in that it starts at 10:00 in order to accommodate the late-risers as well as the band, whose practices have prevented them from attending class in the past. If you've run into anyone who has given time as an excuse for missing class, let them know that we've got a class for them!

Similarly, Gincy and I just started a new small group mainly made up of young families who have not been roped into the small group ministry. With things being as they are at Southwest, we will be seeing a lot more new groups and classes in the future. Praise God!

Speaking of the future, we are calling on all of you to pray for the kick-off of our L.I.F.T. (Learning in Fellowship Together) program, which will be starting in January. I will write more about that later, but for now, we are praying and planning how to best minister to our families during this time!

On a final note, my door and my arms are always open. If I can serve you in any way, just let me know!

Grace to you,
Brandon Groome

(submitted 10/15/08)

Good Morning!

My name is Daphne Hunter. I am the Owner/Operator of First Step Learning Academy. My husband, Oscar and I are bringing an exciting educational opportunity to the community.

The goal of First Step Learning Academy is to produce happy, intelligent, well-adjusted children. Here you will find a nurturing, educational environment for children of ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Classes include infants, toddler, preschool and before/after school programs. First Step Learning Academy is based on the belief that our children's needs are of the utmost importance. This is why we follow the Montessori principles and philosophy to create a positive learning behavior.

Montessori is built on the belief that children who were actively involved in a prepared environment exercising freedom of choice would literally educate themselves, thus, the role that freedom plays in the environment, is crucial. A Montessori classroom operates on three principles: freedom within limits, respect for one's self, for others and for the environment. Respect for the child is the cornerstone on which all other principles rest. Montessori education provides orderliness, independence, self-directed learning, a calm environment, and a place where children are at the center of the learning process.

The folks who write the newspapers or deliver the nightly news are already limbering up the lingo to describe Tuesday's election. Whether McCain accomplishes a stunning comeback or Obama achieves a staggering landslide, be prepared for an onslaught of descriptives - from astounding to miraculous; from stupendous to stellar; from unequaled to unparalleled; from . . . well, you get the idea. Of course, they've had something of a head-start with the recent unprecedented collapse of the financial markets. But doesn't it seem that of late, almost everything has been described as landmark, monumental, earth-shaking, incredible, unbelievable, etc.

Since much of what I do involves working with words, maybe I notice such things more than most, but it seems to me that, come this Wednesday morning, the experts will have exhausted their supply of hyper-adjectives ("beggared for metaphors, staggered for superlatives" is how one guy describes such a condition) and begun to repeat themselves. The result? Not writer's block, but readers "blahs." The senses can stand only so much of the sensational. If everything that happens is exceptional or remarkable, then nothing is. Or more to the point, overwhelmed with hyperbole, we're likely to miss what truly is - well, what is really and truly remarkable or miraculous or to use one I haven't seen recently, mind-boggling! Which is why I want us to begin slowing down a little.

As we move into this season of Thanksgiving, don't wait for the fourth Thursday of November to be thankful. Start today, right now, maybe even before you finish this article and decide that you're going to be thankful and give thanks and celebrate Thanksgiving. And a good place to start might be that whether your candidate wins or loses, the country we live in and the freedoms we enjoy and the blessings that surround us - well, that's plenty to start "saying grace over" right there. The point is - don't wait for the turkey to be on the table to be thankful. Ah, and then comes the Christmas season. Sunday, Nov. 30, Brandon and I will begin preaching through the Advent season. It's a time of the year to quiet our souls, gather our wits and focus our attention on the one event in history worthy of hyperbole - the Word becoming flesh.

Someday, historians will sit down and sort through the events of recent days and most of the things seen today as so significant will be little more than tomorrows footnotes. None will approach the singular significance of what is described in the familiar lines of . . .

One Solitary Life

Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty, and then for three years he was an itinerant preacher. He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put his foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but himself.

While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them betrayed him. Another denied him. He was turned over to his enemies. He went through a mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While he was dying his executors gambled for the only piece of property he had on earth - his coat. When he was dead, he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen long centuries have come and gone and today he is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever were built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, but together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.

So - set aside the newspaper and turn down the volume of CNN or Fox or whatever and start spending some time letting something truly remarkable and miraculous (and all the rest) saturate your soul . . .

Gratefully His & Yours,

Rusty

"Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre; praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord." -- Psalm 15

The Worship Ministry exists to exalt God as Father and Jesus as Lord and Savior, to meet the needs of the entire body so that each would worship in spirit and in truth, to provide outlet for people to use their talents in a way pleasing to God, and to provide ways which people can learn more about God and thus truly understand how and why we worship.Scott Wert

"Go ... and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." -- Matthew 28:19

"...and you shall be my witnesses to Me ... to the end of the earth." -- Acts 1:8

The Missions Ministry of Southwest Christian Church is the instrument of this local body that promotes evangelism and the good news of God's saving grace throughout the world, whether locally, nationally, or internationally.

Our primary method of accomplishing this is through education, both within our church and via support of Christian educational institutions and missionaries, who not only share the good news themselves, but also prepare others to evangelize and minister.

"And they (Christians) were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." - Acts 2:42

The Hospitality Ministry helps build and strengthen friendships and fellowship within the congregation. We have a great time following this biblical guideline of spending time together and sharing our lives.

We oversee the planning of major events (such as Easter Brunch and the Christmas Feast) that include the entire church family. We plan periodic monthly luncheons following our morning worship time. Also, each Sunday morning we provide coffee and donuts for the whole family.

• the attitude that we're not "the only Christians, just Christians only."

A church that:

• works at reaching all ages — from the "greatest generation" to the youngest generation to future generations.

• wants to help every age grow in following Jesus.

• wants to help people build healthy relationships — in families, among friends, and with their Heavenly Father!

A church where:

• you'll discover a place to worship, grow and serve as you follow Jesus.
